RE: Parallel Parking a 5th Wheel

Wow! Must disagree! I *HAVE* stayed there too - I should say "overnighted" - over the years, with short TTs and now with a 34' FW - pulled by a SB. I'm 68, lived in SO. CA all my life - so guess I've done it a few times, LOL! There's *NOT* plenty of room in front and behind the truck - unless you have a short RV! *NO WAY* are the spots "almost double wide"! Besides what I already described. Nice beach. Then a boulder "breakwater - which is about 10-15' above the beach level. You "negotiate" the boulders, or find a break between them to access the beach. Now for the "double wide": The first "width" is however much space YOU leave to exit your RV and/or have room for a fire, BBQ, or whatever. It's a dirt area between your RV and the boulders. YES - that usually "equates" to about ten feet. Sand fleas in the dirt area & small critters among the boulders provide entertainment, LOL! The second "width" is your RV - parallel to the supposed "non-main" road. No way to "fudge" outward - the spots are lined out, the pedestrians, cyclists, dog walkers are right next to the side of your RV in a lined and designated "bike lane". Careful with a slideout! Now for the "not" a main road. NO, it's NOT 101 - but it is the main thoroughfare for the houses at the North end of Rincon Parkway. The section that allows the parking adjoins a long, long "strait shot" of the road. Think it's supposed to be 40 mph (a joke). Ocean on one side - RR tracks on the other, so there's no intersections of any kind - so no cross traffic. (go fast!) Entry/exit to Rincon Pkwy is about 5 miles apart (underpass). Time of day has a lot to do with the amount of traffic. Bushey is correct - with some planning and a slow approach - you can find empty spots which will allow a "pull-through" approach. Slow approach - 'cause if you pass up spots you should have pulled into - you must traverse the road a long way to return and repeat the process. Obviously, tourist "season" (summer) make it more crowded - and at times it will be very full. Returning to the "backing". It would be like putting your FW into a spot that is lined out EXACTLY the length of your FW - with about the width (not the length) of your pickup to spare. BTW - as noted it's a Ventura COUNTY park, not a State Park. Positive side = Great view. Steps to the beach. Surf will lull you to sleep (Amtrak will wake you up). ~ JC

RE: Parallel Parking a 5th Wheel

Sound crazy?? There is a "campground" in Ventura CA called Rincon Highway; people park parallel on asphalt along the highway next to the beach. Sites are about 40' long, nose to tail. Can anyone explain the steps how you would parallel park a 5th wheel in between say a 40' diesel pusher and a TT/FW, etc. knowing if you nick the DP or "whatever rv" someone is not going to be rather upset!!! Thanks in advance! Backing there is kind of a moot issue. It's on the side of Rincon Pkwy which parallels Hwy 101. Busy road. As another poster noted - there are no curbs. It's not a "campground" - simply a place to park parallel along the road on the ocean side, next to the surf - for a fee. NO hookups. NO water. Not cheap - IIRC about $25. per night. The RR tracks are about 50' away, between the road and Hwy 101. (Sounds like the Amtrack is coming thru your RV! :() Usually - at this "camping area" - there is no problem (timing) in finding more than one spot open. You simply pull in, pull forward - and park. The other thing the OP didn't say - is the spots are not long enough for a FW and TV to park "hitched up". Works pretty good for MHs - most will unhook their toad before driving to a spot If your RV is longer than about 30 ft, you must unhook and park the TV perpendicular to your RV. (Think "T" formation.) Even then, it may be a real tight fit. Besides the traffic going by at about 40 mph (that your "back-up" will block) - there's constant foot and bicycle traffic in the foot/bike lane next to the RV's. *NOT* a good place to back in!! All of the above - means it's not a matter of backing "skill" - and I wouldn't even consider an attempt there. ~ JC

RE: State police portable scales

They do in Kalifornia - especially on the roads leading to Glamis in Southern Kalifornia. Overweight without the right license (Non-Commerical Class-A IIRC...) you get a ticket, and park the rig until someone with the right license comes to drive it away. Unlikely. The non-commercial class A is for TTs with GVWRs over 10,000 and 5ers over 15,000 GVWR. No need to weigh them, the GVWR is posted on the VIN plate. Likely. "Glamis" is the dunes area close to the MX border. Any/everybody going there has lots of sand "toys" of all sorts loaded in their toyhaulers. Could easily see why that would be a "weigh-in" spot for the CHP. (overloaded). It's just like the roads from So. CA to/from the CO River - Ski boats in tow. CHP will go out of their way to enforce 55mph speed limit - and watch for the young-uns who have been imbibing at the river and then driving, and/or open container, etc. BTW - how "likely" are "unlikely" things with/for the CHP? Chippie in the San Berdo Mtns bought his own radar gun. Also, the slightest "drift" over the double yellow up there will bring a "greetings". But - if you play by the rules - you don't have a problem! ~ JC

RE: Notched "gate" explanation?

Besides the above (no need to drop the tailgate when hitching), I prefer the notch (or "V") gate over the stock tailgate for other reasons: 1. I have a short bed. If I want to haul something with the tailgate removed, the "V" gate (even steel) is way lighter than the stocker. Also, wouldn't lose any sleep if I dropped an end on the ground. 2. Factory tailgates are a "hot" commodity in some areas. Nobody wants to steal my Northern Tool $150. "V" gate. 3. I have a folding bed cover. "Stuff" in the bed is out of sight, out of mind. My "V" gate has a removable (home-made) section that fills in the "V", and a backing to make it non see-through. So - to haul say a couple of 2x4x8's - I simply remove the "V" section and they hang out nicely. Eight foot step ladder does the same. (Make the 2x4s ten footers for an 8' bed). Does the rear of my truck look as nice as others going down the road? Nope. But I never see it, LOL! IMO - any "mileage improvement" towing is pie-in-the-sky. ~ JC

RE: fifth wheel length - practicality

Your question appears on the Escapees HDT forum from time to time. People are considering larg(er) fifth wheels - along with adequate tow vehicles. Of course they wonder - if "they will fit" - where, how, etc. Suggest you visit Escapees HDT and MDT forums - then do a search on some keywords pertaining to your question. You might be surprised. ~

RE: Dropped it!

If the truck's bed is badly damaged, there is a way to save quite a bit on replacement. Hundreds of stock OEM pickup beds are removed each year to allow aftermarket "upfitter" custom work beds to be installed. Facilities re-sell those almost brand new beds for a whole lot less than what a dealer purchase would cost you. There is a local yard that has racks filled with these beds waiting to be purchased. Many I saw last time I drove by were Public Works yellow(think checker cab). All you have to do is have it repainted to match your truck and have it installed. Second the thought/s above. You're in CA - check major metro areas -like So.CA- in the Recycler (take-off beds), and the Yellow Pages, etc. for the outfits that sell service bodies on pickups. Usually there are lots of complete pickup beds available - "maybe" at a reasonable price. Calling to ask is cheap! ~

RE: This Is Fun????????????

By now, from the replies, you have gathered *YOU* must: Check *EVERYTHING* anyone does in the way of repairs, etc. Just because someone is "in business" (whatever it may be) doesn't mean they, or their employees, know what they are doing! Check (re-check) torque yourself. *NO* impact wrenches for mounting aluminum wheels. (*YOU* need to watch!) Check the brand name of the supplied wheels! There's some genuine "loser" (junk!) aluminum wheels out there. Of course, trlr mfgrs & dealers would *NEVER* cut corners, LOL! ~

RE: American Express - costco card - NEW RULES

Yep, it's the current card that pays 4 percent for fuel... The new language is on page 7 of the new statement... which I just got... I guess the worse they could do is cancel the card...if they think you're not using it for business purposes... But if I bought a WII at Costco would they know? So . . . change your Costco membership to a Business membership. IIRC - the membership fee is the same. ~

RE: How far can you drive on a flat?

Easy answer: Flat tires are *NOT* meant to be driven on - period! (Unless they're some version of "run flat" tires) Try asking your question of any tire mfgr, tire shop, etc. So, you get off (or to the side) of the road to a safe spot ASAP and change it. If the tire survives the "event" - great! If not, time to find a replacement. End of story. ~

RE: Vaseline on Slide Seals??

Aerospace 303 for sure Ditto. *NO* Vaseline *NO* ArmorAll - or other petro based product. "AnnorTom" - take note: Use of ArmorAll on various products -like tires- will void warranty! ~ Go to 303 Products dot com for info on their "stuff". Clickey They will send you a sample pkg of their products ($5. for shipping), and you can usually find 303 Aerospace Protectant at Ace Hdwe for a more expensive "test". ~ BTW (Bruce) - besides the salesman's "BOHICA" Vaseline use (already mentioned), think the "hair stuff" would be: "LB Butch Wax" ~ JC

RE: Mission tire question

Mission tires factory to Yuma 2500 milis two trips to Yuma 5000 trip to Alaska 6000 summers trips 5000 still good. Garbage come on!!! bob *NEVER* wish the garbage to "come on"! :S Murphy will reward you. :) Back to what was said earlier. Your Montana doesn't seem (to me) to be a heavy trailer. Light load = (usually) good service from tires that may be "marginal" to/for someone else. I've got my 10 year old 15" Marathons on a utility trailer. Never blown one yet - from the time they went *from* my light weight TT to the utility trlr. Easily match your miles. Yahoo buckaroo! But . . . for my 12K FW - the factory supplied "D" Marathons were not up to the intended job. ~ JC

RE: Loose dog attacked me and my dog

Chemgoddess1 - I worked in what is claimed to be (one of) the most "dog friendly" cities in the USA - even has a one mile "dog beach", LOL! Your "case in point" story above - demonstrates exactly *OPPOSITE* - of what you say in conclusion. I've been "on this planet" for 68 years - and it has happened before. You don't have to be "attacked" to be "in fear" of being attacked! Case in point. Very upscale neighborhood. My Fire Company was sent on a call of kids being "attacked" by two Pit Bulls. The attack hadn't happened (yet) - but the pit bulls wouldn't allow the kids to walk past the yard (they had got out of) to go home from school. A neighbor saw the "event" taking place and called. Those pit bulls didn't like us any better than the kids. We actually gave the kids a "fire apparatus ride" home (for all our safety) - then waited for animal control. ~ Another "case in point". Dispatched to a "dog bite" call. Two guys working in their garage, at their home with serious dog bites. (One needed lots of stitches). Event: A pit bull was loose in the neighborhood - they had seen it wander by previously. The home owner had a female Golden - which was in the garage also. Mr. PB decided he wanted to meet the Golden - which the owner didn't think was a good idea. Dog *ATTACKED* both men in the garage - when the owner was putting his dog in the yard via a side door. Mr. PB went over a 6' wall to get in the backyard with the Golden - fortunately nothing bad happened to the Golden. After the PD arrived, "we" (except the guys we sent to the hosp) waited for Animal Control - PB still in the backyard! When the Animal Control went into the back yard - having seen the bite victims - the PD Officer followed along "unholstered" - but it turned out OK. Dog captured by a savy Animal Control officer. ~ JC

RE: Loose dog attacked me and my dog

If you have little dogs you must be a - "Boy Scout" !! *Be Prepared* - for "whatever". When I walk my three Paps (on leash, of course), I have my "club" in my back pocket & belt loop. But - 3 small dogs means I have my hands full - so, I try to have "a plan" wherever I'm walking for a safe "retreat" spot - where I can put up a defense and "go to work" if necessary. In the "old days" - a kid's squirt gun with water/ammonia mix was a nice deterrent. And - "it" can happen to big dogs too. I was in the Vet's the other day. Guy in there with a very friendly black lab. Dog had a shaved patch on it's side, with about 6" of stitches. Owner said he was throwing the ball at the park w/ his dog. Two large (equal size) dogs attacked his dog - while a third smaller one slipped in for a "flank attack" while the lab was distracted with the big dogs. Of course, the owner of the 3 dogs (and his dogs) disappeared. One last - I'm a retired F/F. Many, many times I was called to somebody's home for an emergency - and fido is loose. He (or she) doesn't like strangers in his house - and especially strangers in uniforms. ("Oh . . . he/she is very friendly" - yeah right!) Of course, you try to get someone in the house to put the dog in a different room, out in the yard, whatever. Before using the mace - I learned long ago (from a delivery guy) to try - "Get your ball". Sometimes it worked - sometimes it didn't. ~ JC
